Regenerative Medicine Q & A

What is regenerative medicine?

Regenerative medicine is a different approach to healing that’s showing great promise. There are several different forms of regenerative medicine, but what they all have in common is that they use cells or other substances that occur naturally in the human body.

Dr. Shamloo uses two of the most well-established forms of regenerative medicine at his practice:

Stem cell therapy

Stem cells are unique as they’re the only cells in your body that can change into any other kind of cell.

Stem cells are abundant in growing fetuses, and donated cord blood from healthy babies is a rich source of stem cells. As you age, the quantity of stem cells in your body drops, although they remain in places like your bone marrow and fatty tissues.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP)

PRP uses the patient’s own blood, so it’s one of the safest treatments you can have. Dr. Shamloo takes some blood from you and puts it in a special centrifuge that spins the blood at very high speeds. The blood separates, and Dr. Shamloo can draw off the platelets and plasma to prepare an injectable treatment.

How does regenerative medicine work?

Regenerative medicine works by boosting the power of your body’s natural healing and regenerative systems.

When your body gets hurt, your natural healing mechanisms kick in. Your immune system sends growth factors and other substances to the damaged area. Once there, these healing cells usually do an excellent job of repairing wounds. Sometimes though, they don’t quite have the strength to achieve the best job.

By introducing the high doses of growth factors in PRP and stem cells into the damaged area, your body can repair tissue that it couldn’t heal properly before. Improper healing in bones and soft tissues is a common cause of chronic pain, but regenerative medicine can promote a fresh round of healing that could be enough to resolve chronic pain.

What conditions can regenerative medicine treat?
Dr. Shamloo finds that regenerative medicine is achieving excellent results for patients who have conditions such as:

  • Joint pain
  • Arthritis
  • Muscle injuries
  • Tendon strains
  • Ligament tears
  • Torn cartilage
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Tendonitis

There’s still a lot to discover about the uses regenerative medicine could have, but results so far indicate that this is a genuinely beneficial treatment for chronic pain.
